Why One Company

Most backyards need six contractors. Yours needs one.

Most homeowners don't set out to hire six companies — it just happens. A decking company for the deck. A separate patio contractor. A landscaper for grading and plants. Then a fencing company to finish it off. Each with its own schedule, its own scope, and its own opinion about what happens at the property line.

Macaw Deck and Fence plans and sequences the whole project ourselves — deck, patio, outdoor living structure, landscape, and fence — as one job, with one crew and one point of contact. The only company you'll need to call after us is a lawn care crew to mow it.

Our Background

A father-and-son crew, trained in fine woodworking.

Macaw Deck and Fence is run by a father-and-son team originally from Europe. That's where we learned our trade — building custom, high-end saunas and spas for commercial and residential clients, work that doesn't tolerate loose joinery, warped boards, or corners cut where no one's looking.

We brought that standard of fine woodworking to Charlotte, and it shows up in the parts of a build most companies rush past — tight railing joints, clean stair stringers, and finish work that holds up to a close look, not just a glance from the street. It's also why custom saunas are on our services list, not just decks and fences: it's where we started.

What Sets Us Apart

The details that decide whether a backyard lasts.

Any structure is only as good as what's underneath it and who's holding the tools. Here's how we approach both.

01

Footings Sized to Your Soil

Charlotte sits on expansive red clay, so we go past the 12" code minimum where the site calls for it — reaching stable, compacted soil instead of guessing.

02

Built Above Code

Fasteners, joist spacing, and framing are all specced above the minimum requirement — not just enough to pass inspection.

03

Permits & Inspections Handled

Licensed, bonded, and insured in North Carolina. We pull every required permit and stand present for every inspection.

04

Family-Owned, Self-Performed

The crew that quotes your project is the crew that builds it — no sales rep handing you off to a rotating sub.

05

3D Design First

See the layout, materials, and structures in a rendering before we build anything, so changes happen on screen, not on-site.

06

One Crew, Every Phase

Deck to fence and everything between — same team, same standards, one point of contact for the whole backyard.

Decking Material Selection

Pressure-treated vs. composite — the honest version.

Both work in Charlotte's climate. The right one depends on your budget, how much upkeep you want, and how long you're staying put.

Covered porch with wood decking

Pressure-Treated Pine

LOWEST UPFRONT COST
  • Southern yellow pine, dense and treatment-friendly
  • Expect cupping & checking as humidity moves it seasonally
  • Reseal every 1–2 years to block moisture and UV
  • 15–20 year lifespan with regular maintenance
VS

Composite Decking

HIGHER UPFRONT, LOWER UPKEEP
  • Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon — no staining or sealing
  • Won't rot, splinter, or draw termites
  • Runs hotter underfoot in direct summer sun
  • 25–30+ year lifespan, 25–50 yr mfr. warranties
Our take: Selling within 5–7 years or need the lowest entry cost? Pressure-treated is reasonable if you'll actually reseal it. Staying put? Composite pays for itself in avoided labor over 10–15 years. We'll size the real cost difference for your square footage before you decide.

Frequently Asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only build decks, or can you handle the whole backyard?

The whole backyard. Deck, patio, pergola or porch, outdoor kitchen, landscape, and fence — we plan and sequence all of it as one project with one crew, so you're not managing multiple contractors.

Do I need a permit to build a deck or patio in Charlotte, NC?

Almost always, yes — most attached decks and many other structures require a permit and inspection in Mecklenburg County. We handle the application and inspections as part of every project.

Is composite decking worth the extra cost?

If you're staying 10+ years, composite typically saves money over time by eliminating the sealing and staining pressure-treated wood needs every 1–2 years. If budget is the priority or you're moving soon, pressure-treated is reasonable.

Do you build custom saunas?

Yes — it's actually where we started. Our background is in fine woodworking, building custom high-end saunas and spas for commercial and residential clients before we brought that craft to decks, fences, and backyard remodels in Charlotte.

How long does a full backyard remodel take?

A single deck or patio typically runs 2–4 weeks. A full backyard remodel spanning multiple phases depends on scope — we'll give you a realistic sequence and timeline once we've walked the site.

Do you offer a warranty on your work?

Yes — ask us for the specifics for your project type during your consultation. Manufacturer warranties on composite materials run separately, typically 25–50 years depending on the brand.
